ISLAND DIORAMA – conclusions

The diorama is finished. With no idea how to work in foam, I had little idea how to plan the work schedule. I planned 7 sessions, which turned into 14 work sessions. In retrospect, if I was going to make it again, I would split the work differently and get it done in 9 sessions. I would also invest in a different hot-wire tool and might buy thicker xps foam panels rather than layering the 1 inch thick pieces as I spent a lot of time fiddling with hot-wire detailing and spackling the layer joins.

The diorama is sturdy and lightweight and we’re very pleased with how it looks. Making the diorama in papier-mâché would have been slightly cheaper and easier (no new skills needed) but would also have been heavier, possibly not square or sturdy.
